    About Richmond Designs

Richmond Designs is a supplier of high quality custom challenge coins, custom lapel pins and custom embroidered patches. We have been producing custom products for our customers for over over 23 years!

It all began back in 1988. LTC Robert Oldmixon retired from active duty at Fort Lee, Virginia and opened a small shop in the PX there called Appomattox Gallery. In the begriming the business was dedicated to picture framing and a few award plaques. In 1990 we made out first challenge coin for the Fort Lee NCO academy as well as the 240th and 54th Quartermaster company at Fort Lee.

In 1994, we opened our second store, The Award Shop in Colonial Heights, Virginia, just outside Fort Lee.   Shortly after opening this location we moved into our current location on the Boulevard (US Route 1) in Colonial Heights. We have approximately 6,000 sq. feet of space including our showroom and production areas..

Now, with room to grow, we have branched off into many areas of business. From trophies and plaques to medals, challenge coins and custom framed awards. We also offer screen printing, vinyl banners, embroidery, laser engraving, sublimation as well as custom medals made in-house. We have grown substantially with our wide variety of products and capabilities.

Our company began helping our online customers to design and manufacture custom military challenge coins in 1988 with our website military-coins.com. In 1990 we created Richmond Designs as an online division of our company specifically to help our custom challenge coin customers. With our own Internet sales department, we are able to focus on customer military challenge coins and strive to provide excellent service, quality and low prices to our military customers. Since then we have produced coins for the United States Army, Navy, Air Force Marines, Coast Guard as well as many other military and government organizations.

    store

It has not stopped there. Over the years we have increased our product selection to include custom lapel pins, custom embroidered patches and custom key chains. We actually make many more items than we display on our website but we decided to focus on a select few items that we can offer our online customers and add more products later on.

We are often asked "What makes us different from the other guy?" Simple - Hands down there is no other company out there like us. Below are a few key points to our company that no other company in the world can match.

    • We have over 40 years experience with the military. That includes actual time served in the military and the many years we have operated a retail store on a military base.

    • We have two retail locations, one we have operated since 1988 and the other since 1995.

    • We have over 6000 sq ft. of manufacturing space.

    • We have a wider and more diverse inventory of manufacturing equipment than any other awards retailer in the country! This information was given to us after completion of an industry wide survey of awards retailers.

    • We have created and produced over 1,000,000 custom challenge coins, custom lapel pins and awards for customers in every corner of the world.

    • We DO NOT duplicate and sell products we make for our customer on sites like eBay. Many "coin companies" make extra coins that they sell off to other customers which end up on sites like eBay. The pride and honor that goes into the challenge coins and other products we make extends long after the sale. We respect our customers and the value of their designs.

Today, over 12 years later Richmond Designs has managed to grasp a fair share of the market for custom challenge coins and related products. We will continue to bring new products to our customers and try to offer service and reliability second to none. In April of 2010 we opened out online store which we sell challenge coin racks, challenge coin holders, stock challenge coins and military statues. We will be adding stock embroidered patches and other items in the future.

Background: Tussing Elementary School is the school that the children or the owners or Richmond Designs attend. The song went on to gain national attention and was preformed on talk shows and news casts around the county.

    How To Order Challenge Coins

    History of the Challenge Coin

During World War 1, American volunteers from all parts of the country filled the newly formed flying squadrons. Some were wealthy scion attending colleges such as Yale and Harvard who quit in mid-term to join the war.

In one squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck in solid bronze, now called a challenge coins, and presented them to his unit. One young pilot placed the medallion in a small leather pouch that he wore about his neck. Shortly after acquiring the medallions, the pilot`s aircraft was severely damaged by ground fire. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and was immediately captured by a German patrol. In order to discourage his escape, the Germans took all of his personal identification except for the small pouch around his neck.

In the meantime, he was taken to a small French town near the front. Taking advantage of a bombardment that night, he escaped. However, he was without personal identification. He succeeded in avoiding German patrols by donning civilian attire and reached the front lines. With great difficulty, he crossed no man`s land. Eventually, he stumbled onto a French outpost. Unfortunately, saboteurs has plagued the French in the sector. They sometimes masqueraded as civilians and wore civilian clothes. Not recognizing the young pilot`s American accent, the French thought him to be a saboteur and made ready to execute him. He had no identification to prove his allegiance, but he did have his leather pouch containing the medallion. They delayed his execution long enough for him to confirm his identity. Instead of shooting him they gave him a bottle of wine.

Back at his squadron, it became tradition to ensure that all members carried their medallion or coin at all times. This was accomplished through challenge in the following manner- a challenger would ask to see the medallion. If the challenged could not produce a medallion, they were required to buy a drink of choice for the member who challenged them. If the challenged member produced a medallion, then the challenging member was required to pay for the drink.

This tradition continued on throughout the war and for many years after the war while surviving members of the squadron were still alive.

Today most units in the military have their own custom unit coin or challenge coin that represents their specific unit or organization. Challenge coins are given out as a recognition award or a token of appreciation. Over the last few years military unit challenge coins have grown in popularity and are being produced in very large numbers. The number of companies producing or selling custom challenge coins has also exploded with the advent of the internet. When Richmond Designs launched their first website dedicated to custom challenge coins there were only five other companies online selling coins. Today there are hundreds of "Challenge Coin Companies" out there but few have the knowledge and experience that Richmond Designs has.
